Problem:

  • Timing contractions before the birth of a baby can be stressful and can come as a sudden surprise. Timing contractions indicates the timing of a birth and it is important to note their length and frequency. Timers and phones can be out-of-reach or not available when the time comes, leaving people to make estimates and imperfect guesses on when it is time for their babies to come. Memory can be frazzled when people are nervous or in pain, so data collection can be forgotten or altered when not recorded in real time.

Scope/Solution:

  • Design and research for a Contraction Timer App made for the Apple Watch. Pregnant people may not start timing contractions unless further along and more noticeably closer together without access to an easily available tracker. With access through an Apple Watch, which sits conveniently on ones arm at all times, one can easily punch in their experiences in real time, knowing sooner when they’re in labor and when it is ‘go time.’

  • The app can also be helpful throughout pregnancy, as contractions happen throughout, not just when the time comes to give birth. Doctors can use this data to help them better understand the individuals experience through their pregnancy, and lead to better patient/doctor relations.

Deliverables:

  • App and Interface Design

  • Research: Audience Observations and Data Collection, App Functions and Design

  • Logo and Branding

Data Questions:

What is important to know? What should be tracked? How should data be read and understood? What is missing from your experience with this app? How helpful would this be? How likely would you be to use this?
